The Battle of Jutland Centenary commemorative site opens today commemorating the fallen of both navies. It is being built (we’re not there quite yet!) for educators, historians and anyone seriously interested in understanding the decisive naval engagement of the First World War.

  • Two podcasts about the battle, the book and the “backstory”.
  • Numerous databases that are just starting:
    • on the ships that took part,
    • the signals that were sent,
    • the gunnery records,
    • JRJ’s press cuttings from 1916-1917 (the other 800 pages will launch quite soon. They’re done).
    • There is a digital roll of Honour for the British and German fallen. These data will be gradually incorporated into larger and better funded platforms.
    • Paintings and photos.
    • You will have access to hi-res scans of Harper’s maps (the clean ones found by my brother at home) as well as Groos’ 1926 maps. In the battle section you will see an idea of where we want to go with the animations.
  • The translation platform, a project very close to my heart where we will work to revive some of the old German literature on the Skagerrakschlacht.
  • Sharing platforms:
    • A way to curate any of the shoebox history that has not yet seen the light of day.
    • Local events and points of interest conected with the battle. A Google map “drop a pin” app will help highlight these around the world.
  • A detailed list of events that we know of.
  • Source documents and links that are of interest to teachers and historians. There are also some ready-made presentations for teachers to use in class.

On behalf of the Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and HMS VICTORY, well done Nick for getting this up and running. We look forward to exploring the site as it evolves. Peter
